VIDEO: Man Fleeing Cops On Lawnmower Shoots Self In Hand After Pulling Gun

Bodycam footage reveals a Michigan deputy’s quick action during a tense arrest involving a suspect on a lawnmower who pulled a firearm. The suspect, charged with multiple felonies, accidentally shot himself in the hand when tased by the officer, underscoring the risks faced by law enforcement.

LEONI TOWNSHIP, MI (2-minute read) — Body camera footage from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office showcases a dramatic incident on September 19, when a probation violation arrest spiraled into a dangerous encounter. Deputies pursued James Mitchell Kerr, 41, who attempted to evade law enforcement on a riding lawnmower before pulling a handgun, ultimately injuring himself.

The confrontation began when Deputy Robert Henderson attempted to apprehend Kerr for failing to pay child support, a probation violation. When instructed to dismount the lawnmower, Kerr accelerated instead, prompting a brief chase. Kerr eventually stopped in a ditch, but the situation escalated when he retrieved a black handgun from the mower’s seat.

Henderson deployed his Taser just as Kerr drew the firearm. As the suspect collapsed from the Taser’s effects, a gunshot rang out—Kerr had accidentally shot himself in the hand. Henderson swiftly secured the scene, calling for backup to assist.

Following treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, Kerr was booked into the Jackson County Jail. He faces charges including assault with intent to murder, using a firearm in a felony, and resisting arrest.

An internal investigation cleared Deputy Henderson of any policy violations, affirming his actions as justified. The sheriff’s office also requested the Michigan State Police to conduct a separate investigation, reflecting the department’s commitment to transparency.

Sheriff Gary Schutte emphasized the risks officers face daily, stating, “This incident underscores how rapidly a seemingly routine encounter can escalate.”

Kerr is set to appear before Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson for a pretrial hearing on November 22.

Safety Tip: If confronted by law enforcement, comply with commands calmly to ensure safety for all involved. Escalation increases risks and legal consequences.
